CBD oil for anxiety: The science of it all

CBD oil has been found to have positive effects on those suffering from daily and chronic anxiety.

For a lot of people, simply slowing down and practicing meditation is enough to relax them from a stressful day. However, if the usual practices of meditation, therapy, or exercise and yoga don’t work, maybe it is time to try something new.

CBD oil has recently been legalized in all 50 states since 2018. Now you can add it to your arsenal to fight the daily battles with crippling anxiety.

Legalization of CBD oil

It is important to note that CBD oil is different from medical marijuana. Medical marijuana has been studied, and continues to receive more attention as it is slowly becoming legal in more states. However, CBD oil exclusively has not had as much attention from studies regarding anxiety.

In general, cannabis has been found to help with social anxiety, post traumatic stress disorder, and obsessive-compulsive disorder. Cannabidiol oil is different from cannabis in that it doesn’t provide the same high from THC. However, it does come from the same plant family and has similar effects on those who use it.

Cannabidiol is now legal in all 50 states as long as it has a THC level lower than 0.3% (compared to the 5-20% found in marijuana). Cannabidiol is from the hemp plant and will not get you high as its cousin, marijuana, will. 

The science of it all

How CBD oil effects anxiety is still being studied. However, it is known that CBD oil interacts with receptors in the nervous system and can alter the serotonin signals going to your brain. This works in the same way that popular big pharma medications such Zoloft or Prozac, but it is a natural product rather than synthetically made in a chemical lab.

A lot of the research done previously was done on animals and is still being further studied for humans. However, most people who use CBD oil report having lower levels of anxiety and their doctors are seeing physical symptoms such as increased heart rate start to diminish as well.

In this study out of Brazil, scientists found that patients given either 400mg of CBD oil or a placebo, the patients with the CBD oil had “significantly decreased” anxiety levels. As reported in the Journal of Psychopharmacology, this double blind study looked at generalized social anxiety disorder with promising results.


If you are currently taking an antidepressant or anti-anxiety medication, consider talking to your doctor about switching to CBD oil instead. Remember don’t stop any medication without first consulting your doctor as that can have other negative side effects.

However, the addition of all-natural CBD oil to therapy treatments and meditation should help improve your daily life and decrease the debilitating effects anxiety can have on your life.
